This tour will take you to the summit of Volcán Barú, the highest point in Panama at 3,477 meters above sea level. The volcano is surrounded by cloud forests where we will search for regional endemic birds of the Talamanca mountain range, which extends from Costa Rica into the highlands of Chiriquí in western Panama.

This itinerary can be added as an extension to our Chiriquí Highlands tour.

Departing from the town of Boquete on special all-terrain vehicles, we will climb the very rough trail to the summit of the volcano, with several stops on our way to look for cloud forest specialties like Black-cheeked Warbler, Sooty-capped Chlorospingus, Costa Rican Pigmy-owl and Timberline Wren.

If we have a clear day, we will enjoy a spectacular view from the volcano’s summit, with the possibility of seeing both the Pacific and Caribbean shores of Panama. The sunset from the country’s highest point is considered one of the most stunning sights in Central America. Volcano Junco and Sooty Thrush are easily found above the treeline, and White-nosed Coati are often active around the parking area.

After sunset we will start our drive down from the summit, and on the way we will look for the elusive Saw-whet Owl, Bare-shanked Screech-Owl and Dusky Nightjar. Forest rabbits are frequently seen along the trail.
Overnight in Boquete.

After breakfast, we will explore different trails around the town of Boquete, in search of regional endemic species such as Black-throated Wren, Black-faced Solitaire, Wrenthush, Long-tailed Silky-Flycatcher and more.

After lunch we will visit Finca Lérida, a coffee-growing estate surrounded by forested hillsides and well-planted gardens, where Sulphur-winged Parakeet, Blue-throated Toucanet, Volcano Hummingbird and many other species are common and approachable. Forest trails departing from the estate offer good chances for Resplendent Quetzal and Three-wattled Bellbird.

This morning we will bird along the Boquete side of Los Quetzales trail, in search of highland forest birds like Black-and-Yellow Silky Flycatcher, Collared Whitestart, Yellow-thighed Finch, Spangle-cheeked Tanager and many more.In the afternoon we will drive to David in order to take our flight back to Panama City. We will drive you to your hotel of choice in or around Panama City.

Are airport transfers included in a stay at the Tamandúa?

Do I need a Vida to Enter Panama?

US and Canadian citizens need only a valid passport. Other nationalities please consult the nearest Panamanian Consular office. Your passport MUST HAVE at least 6 months validity remaining from your return date home.

Can you recommend any family-friendly attractions?

Absolutely! Families can enjoy the nearby adventure park with zip-lining and rock climbing, as well as scenic nature walks and a local wildlife sanctuary.

What are the check-in and check-out times?

Check-in begins at 3 PM, and check-out is by 11 AM. Early check-ins or late check-outs may be arranged upon request, depending on availability.

How do I check the availability and book a stay?

You can check availability and make a reservation through our 'Book Now' page. Simply select your dates, number of guests, and submit your booking request.

Do you require a security deposit?

Yes, we require a security deposit which will be fully refunded after your stay, provided there are no damages or policy violations.

What is your cancellation policy?

We offer a full refund if you cancel at least 7 days before your scheduled arrival. If you cancel within 7 days of your stay, you’ll receive a 50% refund.
